CHANGE YOUR HABITS
by buying better quality bicycles
and that doesn't necessarily mean paying big dollars.
Consumerism has impacted on our environment and we now should be
thinking about changing our shopping habits. By deciding that the next bike you
buy will be one that lasts several generations, means you decrease your impact
on environmental resources, energy and landfill.
Aluminium, Titanium and Carbon Fibre are energy and resource
hungry materials that have short life spans. Carbon Fibre has been described as
the 'asbestos of the 21st Century' while Titanium's drawback are the
environmental toll of mining it and the pollution caused by the heat and electricity
needed to refine the metal from ore. Aluminium also has a huge impact on our
environment and uses massive amounts of electricity to extract from the
principal ore, bauxite. To produce one ton (908kgs) of aluminium takes 16,000
KWH of power.
Other drawbacks of each of these materials is the fact that both
Carbon Fibre and Titanium can not be repaired where Aluminium has a short life
span as frames will fatigue with use and eventually crack or break - not worth
repairing in the long run. Only a very small percentage of Aluminium in bicycle
frames is recycled material.
My preferred frame material has always been Steel. Even though
processing iron ore still requires huge amounts of energy and mining all natural
resources has irreversible impacts - by choosing steel we are selecting a
material that can be recycled, lasts lifetimes, is robust and can also be
successfully repaired and rejuvenated. In the US, 60% of steel production comes
from recycled steel.
And in my personal opinion, steel bicycles are just nicer to
ride.
Here are a few steel frame bicycles we stock that will serve you
well for years to come. Make the right choice for the environment - you can't
afford not to.
