Steel City Cycle Works was established in January 1999. Owner Kade Smith has been a bicycle mechanic since 1989 and has worked as a mechanic and workshop manager for some of Sydney's leading cycle retailers.

The impetus behind Steel City was the growing need for more personal and dedicated customer service in the retail bicycle workshop. As the majority of cycle retailers struggle to supply the biggest range of bicycles some have ignored the value of quality after sales service, especially in the workshop.

Steel City endeavours to treat every customer with equal interest and respect, offering genuine advice, taking every enquiry seriously. All bicycles are serviced and repaired with equal care and attention to detail. Safety is a prerequisite.

Our  focus is bicycle repairs and servicing. We carry a select range of new bicycles and are happy to special order from our range of brands.

Serving you with 21 years of workshop and sales experience!

Geoff Lawton's Permaculture Custom

In April 2010 I took the Permaculture Design Course at The Australian Permaculture Institute just north of Lismore NSW. Instruction was given by Geoff Lawton who has become renown for his extensive knowledge in design principals worldwide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Lawton

During the course Geoff and I talked about a bike that would be durable, reliable and low maintenance. He had an old Malvern Star MTB that he was thrashing the life out of around his 60acre farm, so was in need of a good upgrade.

The Cromoly Surly 1x1 seemed to fit the ticket on price and durability. The 8 speed internal hub for its low maintenance and a suspension fork for the off road tracks around the Institute.

Shimano Alfine 11 speed Hub

"Shimano is stirring up the market for internal hub gears with the launch of its new 11-speed Alfine model. Could this be a new challenge for the German-engineered Rohloff hub, by far the favourite of touring cyclists to date?"

A Change of attitude will see cycling become second nature.

An interesting article from SMH - read here

Personally, I believe adults should have the choice to wear a helmet - this would indeed see an increase in the number of cyclists. I also believe all footpaths should be twice the current width and all shared pathways.
